Wireless keyboard will not connect

I've been through battery change, shut down, remove batteries and set-up as if out of the box and went to the apple store to verify that the keyboard works and is discoverable. The Bluetooth set up doesn't work and selecting the Bluetooth icon in the upper right of the screen shows ny mouse but not keyboard. If not for my iPad.... Can anyone help? Thx
