Whole monitor screen isn't filled with newly upgraded OSX

I recently upgraded my Mac Book Pro from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. Since then, the image on my monitor has been reduced by about 1 inch on all four sides. How do I set things up so the whole monitor screen will be used? This is true both on the Mac Book Pro screen and on a 17 inch monitor that I have connected up.

I never had this problem before.
