What does a HomePod remember about what's it playing?

What does a HomePod remember about what's it playing? It appears to remember what song it's playing.

Does the HomePod download a whole song before playing it? Or multiple songs?

Honestly, I have no idea. As you know, I have basically no experience with the HomePod, other than what we have discussed.

I would guess it acts similar to any other AirPlay device, with maybe a little more intelligence. I believe it buffers the song as it is streamed/played, instead of downloading the entire song or multiple songs. It does have communication with the source as far as which device it is streaming from, buffering, current song metadata, etc.

I haven't found any detailed information on how it actually works, but will let you know if I do.
