Uninitialized cd drive - help

I have a 2015 imac - im a new mac user and I love it - my external cd drive goes straight into disc utility saying its uninitialized (id like to make mp3 discs for my car) what do I need to do to initialize the cd drive - really appreciate some help - many thanks

Hello and welcome.

-Which version of macOS?
-Which brand/model is the eternal CD drive?
-Are you getting the uninitialized error will all discs, or just blank CD-Rs?
-Where are the MP3 files stored - loose, in iTunes/Music, etc.?
-What software are you using to burn the discs?
