*spotlight Will Be Available As Soon As The Contents Of Computer Have Been Indexed

HELP.
Finally by holding down the shift key I have been able to log in and boot up again.
My SPOTLIGHT however constantly shows *,that its INDEXING THE CONTENTS OF MY COMPUTER.
WHAT IS HAPPENING?

RUNNING MAC 10.4.10 Powerbook g4 1.5Ghz 12"
