Problems with external monitor

Hi all
My first post on here so hope it's in the correct place :)

I have my MacBook pro hooked up to a standard of monitor as the screen broke . By mistake I changed the resolution to max and since then my monitor cannot display anything ... I am wondering if there is a way to change back the resolution to standard using an external monitor ? I have tried booting my Mac in safe mode but nothing is showing up on my monitor :/

Any help here would be really appreciated
