External Monitor Problems

So i have a Macbook Pro and i wanted to connect it to this monitor i had. I got an adapter to connect it from the monitor's DVI to my computer's USB. Everything seemed to work fine, it mirrored my laptop properly. Then i switched the setting so that it would be an extension of my laptop. When i dragged windows to the monitor, they broke apart into rectangles and didn't ever fully load. i tried dragging and clicking my mouse, but the image got more broken up. Not sure what the problem is and wondered if anyone else did and could help me fix it.

Sounds like your GPU might not have enough RAM for extended.
Unless you really do mean USB, and then I'd say USB just isn't fast enough, why didn't you use the MacBook's monitor out port not USB.
