Problems with Aperture

Hi all, hope you can help.....

I am using Aperture 2.1.4 on a 24" iMac 2.16 GHz intel core duo & 3 GB RAM. When editing pics, my machine is running very slowly (no other apps open at the time) and I too often get frozen screen and nonsense images. It doesn't affect the file (importing in JPEG large from Canon 7D) can anyone help me?????
