my powerbook shorts out when i touch the touchpad. i'm pretty sure that's what's happening, anyway. it seems to be getting more common, and can also occur when i hit the open-apple key, which is right next to the touchpad.

can this be repaired at home, or should i take it to an apple store for repairs?

Well, if it's a PowerBook, it's probably out of warranty. Thusly, repairs can tend to be expensive.

However, I would guess it's an issue in which the keyboard is actually touching/grounding itself with other components beneath it internally in the PB. If this is the case, it would definitely be best to have a professional look at it.
