What Apple software comes with that OS? Maybe the word processor Apple includes can read .docx files.

That's surprising. Typically the Apple OS includes the "suite" that contains a Word Processor and a Spreadsheet program, at the minimum.

Given that you are using such an old OS, it could be difficult to find a program that will do what you need done. Libre Office is a free, open source suite that has high marks, but it requires at least OS 10.8.

But you'll need to upgrade to at least OS 10.8. It will not work with OS 10.4.11.
