OSX Mountain Lion hard drive problem

Hello, so I just downloaded mountain lion and I had some problems. Everything was going great until it went to the OSX installer. It looked like it was going to start then a error message pops up and says "OSX could not he installed on your computer, because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired" is there anything I can do? I thought my hard drive was good since I took it in to get a fan fixed and the guy noticed the hard drive wasn't booting properly. I haven't performed a back up in a while either. Any help please!

Hi,

-Does the Mac still boot and run normally in Lion?
-Are you able to make a backup now?
-Do you have any utilities to test the HD?
