Opening PDF documents

I can no longer click and open pdf documents in Preview that are sent to me via email. I have to send it to a download folder and then open it in Adobe Accrobat Reader. Why can I no longer open pdf docs in Preview?

Is this true for all PDF files? If so, Preview.app must be damaged, and since that app is part of the default macOS apps, you probably need to reinstall macOS.
