New Keyboard Lacks Sleep Button

I bought a Yilandi keyboard (which I generally like) but it lacks a sleep button. And I was used to using that a lot on the previous keyboard. My drop-down menu sleep function doesn't work well (sometimes a dozen or more tries). So I thought that dedicating the f19 (where the old sleep button was by position) would help.

But I'm having difficulty understanding how to program function keys. Most explanatory sites want me to remember a series of several commands like control/ /shift/6 or something. I'm too casual a user for that. Is there a way I can dedicate f19 to just be a sleep button to put the mac mini to sleep?

I can follow instructions even if I don't know why they work.

An easier way to do this is to use Hot Corners. I have mine setup to put the display to sleep when I hold down control and move my mouse to the bottm left corner of the screen.

Here is Apple's article on thHot Corners: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/use-hot-corners-mchlp3000 Select the version of macOS that you have in the pulldown menu on top of the page.

If you prefer to remap a function key to do this, you would need to use an app like Karabiner-Elements (https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org) to remap the key.

My thoughts, exactly. I have Option-[bottom left corner] as never sleep, Option-[top left corner] as sleep.

You can also go to the  menu and choose Sleep. But this choice is somewhat brutal. The Mac seems to go into deep sleep, and when I waken it, my Display settings, resolutions, would be changed, and sometimes I even have to reboot for the particular resolution to come up in the Displays preference.

Pressing the power button for about two seconds will put it to sleep, but, again, brutal. My personal choice is using Hot Corners.

Not sure if this is a Sonoma 14.0 bug, or just 14.1 because I never bothered to check my previous settings which were in place for years. Now when I want to get to Hot Corners, first I have enter hot corners in Settings and it will show it both under Accessibility and under Desktop & Dock. The former will not allow you to make changes; the latter, showing “Hot Corner Shortcuts” will work. One more 🐜.

Tony,

Just FYI..

Hot Corners under the Accessibility Settings if for the Accessibility Keyboard. Apple Should have named this differently so to not confuse people. To manually get to that settings window you go to Accessibility > Keyboard > click the i next to Accessibility Keyboard.
