Need new login password

I am trying to find a way to create a new password for login on my Mom's iMac, have been following instructions from the Apple support but what they say will be there is not. Don't have an old password and even when they say you can do it without the old password, they still insist on making you provide the old password. If I had the old password I would not need to create a new one
