Moving emails

I remember many years ago, I was able to find the actual files that were the mailboxes. As I remember, I was able to copy emails, move to another computer, and add them to the appropriate mailbox.

Now, in current MacOS, I cannot even find where the emails are kept. My problem is migrating to a new computer. I went to an Apple-certified company to have them do it. I was told that their diagnostics showed that the disc in the old computer was not working properly, so they could not do the migration.
We had been using the old computer right up to that time, and had no indication of any disc problem.

So I am trying to find a DIY method of preserving the emails from the old computer (regular files should be no problem). I have discovered that I can copy emails from a mailbox and store them in a folder (they get a tag of "eml", but I cannot then put them back into a mailbox. I suspect that in the process they lose the metadata that says they are emails. But that way, I can at least preserve them.

The macOS Mail location is in the ~/Library/Mail folder, but this folder is hidden by default. To access it, open Finder, click the Go menu, hold down the Option key, and select Library. From there, navigate to Mail to find your data, including individual message files (
*.eml
) within subfolders.

To find the Mail folder
  1. Click the desktop to make sure you are in the Finder.
  2. Click the Go menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard. A Library option will appear in the menu.
  4. Click Library.
  5. In the Library folder, click on Mail.

Alternative method using "Go to Folder"
  1. Open a new Finder window by pressing Command + N or clicking the Finder icon in the Dock.
  2. Click the Go menu and select Go to Folder... (or press Shift + Command + G).
    • Type or paste the following path: ~/Library/Mail and click Go.
