Hello. I read that I might not want to migrate everything from a 7 year old iMac to a new iMac.
Is there a disadvantage to using the migrating feature from an old desktop or should I manually be removing files first?
Thanks.

Hello,

Yes, it is a good idea to only migrate some things from older Macs, especially if they are behind several versions of macOS. Also, modern Macs are now running flash storage, and have less capacity than older models, so not everything will fit.

I would suggest the following:
  • Make sure you have a current Time Machine or other backup of your data
  • Copy rarely used files to an external storage device before migrating
  • Delete files that are no longer used
  • When using Migration Assistant, migrate only your user files and not applications, etc.
Hope that helps,

C
