This has been going on for a long time. I've just gotten around to asking a question about it. My MacOS won't RESTART. 10.11.6 iMac. You command a RESTART (as in menubar : Apple->Restart) and you get a black screen with a spinning ball that seems to spin forever. To restart, I have to shut down the system and manually restart it. Not a big deal, but pretty peculiar. Explanations? I have other 10.11.6 systems that do it right.

Hello,

I vaguely remember this issue with El Capitan. You could try logging out, then restarting from the login screen. See if that either restarts normally, or goes into finishing a software update installation.

Hmmm. Yes, that works. Restarting from the login screen. Is that a "feature" of El Capitan?

;)

No, it's not a feature...it should restart from theFinder menu bar Restart command. It is probably a software issue somewhere in your user. Do you have another user that you can see if the issue happens when logged into it?
