Hi there, so I want to reset my mac to its factory settings. I looked up tutorials and all of them told me to go to recovery mode, open disk utility, and erase the disk. However, when I do this, I get an error that says that the partition failed because the disk couldn't be unmounted. Please help.

(By the by, I'm trying to get rid of the greyed out partition that I made by accident, and things happened and I ended up deleting my os as well.)

What was on that partition you accidentally made? Anything? So there is no operating system on this mac? Can you see this partition from within Disc Utility while in Recovery Mode? Can you highlight it then click the minus to remove & restore the single partition?
