mac mini drive... help!

i got my mac mini from a friend, and the dvd drive in it doesnt work. it sounds weird, and doesnt read anything. so i want to take the drive out of my laptop, which fits in the port the mac drive goes into, but when i swapped them it said that the laptop drive wasnt supported. i have os x 10.3.9, and the drive i want to put in is a sony crx880a combo drive. please help, i really need to update to tiger.
