Little help on external display issue

I have a MacBook… maybe a 2009-2010 version. All software up-to-date. I bought a new 23" HP Pavilion monitor to hook up so I would have a larger screen.

When this is connected to the MacBook, shouldn't it "automatically" show up in displays? Or is there something I have to download from Apple?

I thought there was a connection issue, so I tried it on my other, newer MacBook that had an LG screen already connected. It didn't work there and now the LG screen won't reconnect to the newer MacBook either.

Is it the Insignia VGA adapter? Should I have purchased the Apple adapter? I've already returned one Insignia adapter to Best Buy telling them it didn't work. I'm out of ideas.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome.

My first thought would be the display adapter. You could always buy/try an Apple adapter to rule out the Insignia.
