Keyboard locks up on MacBook

Hi. I have just bought a MacBook, and for some strange reason, the keyboard will lock up every now & then and I can't type or delete anything. the only thing I can do is close the application or sometimes I need to shut down for everything to be OK. I am a newbie so please be gentle if this is a REALLY dumb question.
