Itunes freezes as soon as I open it

I have a macbook air osx 10.8.5 2012. iTunes was freezing every week or so but now it freezes every time i open it. It looks normal until I click on it then I get this spinning ball indefinitely. I have to force it to close. I'm new to mac so I don't have a clue. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
