Installing Downloads

How does one install programs after downloading? As when I try to install it keeps opening Image Browser. Thanks if you can help me

Can you explain exactly what it is that you do when the downloaded file is sitting on your Desktop that causes Image Browser launch. Do you mean Preview? I don't have Image Browser installed on my iMac??
