I plan to switch to Macs as soon as I can afford to.

My big question is whether to buy the iMac or Macbook pro?
I managed to make some pro's and cons of each.

--iMac--

Pro's:
- Less expensive
- More ram and larger hard disk then MBP.
- Will not have to worry about heat issues.
- No learning a new way of computing as opposed to getting comfortable with using a laptop.

Cons:
- Not portable " Dial-up is the only form of internet available here so downloading updates would take a while.
- will take up a bit more space.

--Macbook Pro--

Pro's:
- Portable. I could take it to the nearest wifi hotspot and download the updates.
- Has a compact design and wouldn't take up a lot of room.
- Has a cool case design and light up keyboard. lol

Cons:
- I don't know how hot it gets
- laptop batteries seem to go bad quickly.
- Have to get used to working on a laptop style computer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to get either the 20' iMac or the 17' Macbook Pro.

So which one do you think I should get?

Hi there,

sounds like you've got a good 'thought' process going there...

To help advise you further...what do you want the Mac for ?

What are your main uses ?

Thanks,

My main uses will be for:

- Graphics design both 2d and 3d

- Some music editing with garageband

- I want to learn applescript so doing that too.

- Web browsing and email.

Either one of the computers I want to put as much ram and space as I can to increase its speed and lifespan.

At the end of the day, only you can really decide, regardless of any advice given. I will say though, from the information you have given, both machines will do fine, and, if it was me, I would go for the iMac as opposed to the MBP, and one reason is because of monitor size as you are doing 2D/3D graphics.

It depends really what factor in each machine is important to you - like "portability" etc, so, maybe relist your pro's/con's in order of importance?

Hi there,

before the Intel Macs I would have said go with the iMac, it was a lot quicker than the PowerBook !

Now they are both similar speeds, the MacBook Pro will be slower because of the drive spin speed, but it's still certainly quick enough for what you want to do !

Personally I like Laptops, always have.

The light up keyboard is very nice !

Have a trip to your local Apple store and give them both a trial run...
