My finder keeps seizing up. Like several times an hour. It lasts for 1-3 minutes each time.

In the Console I see this message repeating every time this happens.

IconServicesD - Error writing to data to file at path: <private>

Does anyone know how to see what the <private> is? Or how to fix this?

2017 iMac, running Mojave.

Hello and welcome.

Sorry for the delayed response.

-Is it totally random, or when you are using a particular application?
-Do you have any external drives, folders, applications with custom icons?

Thanks for getting back to me :)

It's almost constant.

And as far as custom icons--do you mean icons I made myself?

Side note that may be relevant--if I try and turn off "show icon preview" with Show View Options in Finder, it doesn't work. Every jpeg or psd file still shows an icon of the actual contents instead of a Jpeg or PS symbol.

Hi,

Yes, that's what I meant. Any custom drive or application icons.

And yes, that could be related. Maybe a corrupted preference file? Does it happen when specific Finder windows are open, the Desktop, both, etc.?

No I haven't made any custom icons.
And it happens when I open the finder to almost any folder. I'm a graphic designer and I have a billion images and photoshop files here, but I try to keep them in folders to make things tidier. When I open a folder, it freezes. Also Spotlight freezes often.

It doesn't happen on my desktop because I keep the desktop clean.

How can I figure out which preference file is corrupt please?
