Each morning when I start to work on my Desktop iMac I get the message that my iMac is already in use on the network and the name has been changed to a different "number" local. What is going on?

Sounds as if another Mac is simply using the same sharing name. You can change your Mac's name here:
> System Preferences... > Sharing > Computer Name:
Just make it something unique and the issue should be resolved.
