Delete ghost email addresses

While addressing email other similar email addresses appear that DO NOT appear in contacts. I don't know where they come from and I don't know how to delete them since there are no CONTACT cards for them.

Ex. I want to email Jan Smit. I have her in CONTACTS. When I enter her name in an email address 3-4? other similar names appear for which there are no cards in CONTACTS; "(e-mail address removed) AND (e-mail address removed) AND (e-mail address removed)... etc"

How can these ghost emails be found? deleted?

I'm running iMac Yosemite 10.10.4

I have endured this problem for years.

Hello and welcome.

Apple Mail sometimes adds names/email addresses to a Previous Recipients list. You can view and edit it as follows:

1. In Mail, in the menubar click on Window > Previous Recipients
2. In the window that pops up, click the word Name to sort by name
3. Click on an entry to highlight it
4. Click the Remove From List Button to delete it

They should not autofill after that.
