Help with new nano - Please

Hello. I recently purchased the new Ipod Nano, 8g.. and I cannot run it on my computer or even install a newer itunes, because my system is too old, (I inherited an old Macbook from my brother.. it has osx 10.2.8). Is the only solution - to use my new Ipod - to buy a new computer, thus newer operating system??
Please help!
