G5 with OSX 10.5.8 cant see printer

I tried to plug in my newly bought mac into my printer. I went to system preferences then printer and Fax then I think I selected from the drop down box of driver softwares. I found the right driver (corresponding to my printer model) and i think i hit the plus button, but I didnt "lock it " with the key icon. Anyway it wont print. The print queue box shows the print job for about 2 seconds and then it dissappears. This is very dissappointing !!! Alan
