G3 won't start up

I've an old G3 and used software update to bump up to 10.4.7 so I could use an ipod. However, then realised that I've only 128mb and it needs 186. Then tried to restart but it now freezes on the Mac OSX screen and the line doesn't get filled in.
I got extra RAM and installed it last night, but I've got the same freezing problem.
Any suggestions very gratefully received.
