Finder Quit unexpectedly

My mac-book pro running 10.6.8 started with giving me an error "finder quit unexpectedly" then started giving the same error for all other programs i open.Also my desktop has disappeared.So I googled how to restore to factory setup and now my mac is stuck on grey screen but mouse cursor is movable around the screen.

-Which exact model of MacBook Pro?
-Did you experience any other issues before this issue started - freezing, powering off, etc.?
-Do you have any third-party hardware installed - RAM, hard drive, etc.?
-What are you using to perform the reinstall - grey discs that came with the MBP, retail disc, etc.?
