Sorry, need a little more information.

Put in your DVD and try a Restore in Place.

Thanks for reply Kaveman. I'm running a MacbookPro intel 2 duo,OS X 10.6.8
I was attempting to download a beta version of Lightroom and had the message Insufficient room. Is that enough info? It's running OK otherwise but I'm worried about switching it off in case I can't open again. I'm here in Scotland on holiday from Australia so don't have any discs.
Thanks again.

The hard drive icon has gone from the desktop. Any ideas how to find free space another way?

From the menubar in Finder:

1. Click Finder
2. Click Preferences...
3. Click General
4. Check box next to Hard disks until it shows a checkmark

The HD should appear on the Desktop. Then double-click to open a Finder window. Make sure that you have Show Status Bar under View in menubar activated. It will then display free HD space at bottom of Finder window.

Oops! ;)

-Can you navigate the HD at all? Possibly get to Disk Utility?
-Do you have an external HD with Mac OS X on it?

It sounds like the system won't boot properly due to very low HD free space.
