Failed 10.8 install due to HD error. How back to 10.7?

I tried to install 10.8 on my Macbook Pro but failed due to an apparent unrepairable HD error but I can still safe boot in Lion 10.7. If I try normal start up it goes to 10.8 install mode and fails because of the HD error. Since I can boot 10.7 safe mode, any way to retire 10.7 so it boots up normally?

This means you main drive has some Hard Drive errors, this is very bad.

Ensure you have a complete backup ASAP, and start with a full hard drive reformat and clean install.
