Desktop icons freeze

I have a 2.66 mhz iMac 20" with latest Leopard software.
Occasionally, I notice the desktop icons freeze. No amount of clicking has any effect although I can right click on the desktop and get the menu up, dock icons work fine.
I only have the Mac HD, Time Machine, XP and a few folders on the desktop. If I plug in a memory card or, there is no indication on the desktop that I have done so..
I have repaired permissions to no effect, I can only access them if I do a restart. A bit like Windows!
Any ideas?
