SOLVED Desktop icons disappeared

While using my iMac (2016; running Catalina), I realized that all the icons on the desktop had disappeared. I can still get to those files via iCloud, but I want them back on Desktop. Any idea how to get that to happen?

It has been a while since I last ran macOS Catalina so this path might not be accurate: System Preferences -> Apple ID -> iCloud (on sidebar) and make sure iCloud Drive is checked. Click on Options… and Desktop & Documents Folders should be checked.

Click Done. If you have sufficient free space on your drive, I recommend NOT checking Optimize Mac Storage. As long as you are not low on disk space, this can be more trouble than it is worth.
