Desktop disappeared from MacBook Pro

Hi — I've got a MacBook Pro 2019 running Catalina.

Inexplicably my 'Local desktop' and all the files within it have simply vanished. Everything was backed up in the Cloud and nothing appears to be lost.

Is restoring as simple as just copy and pasting the desktop from the iCloud into the local? And how do I make sure that when I save things in the local its a mirror image of the drive?

Hello and welcome.

It does sound like you may have enabled  > System Preferences... > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Desktop & Documents Folders, which will "move" them to iCloud. I haven't used that functionality, but there is some information on Apple's website: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive. It does explain how to turn it off if enabled.
