Deleting files

This is new to me. I have files on an external HD that cannot be deleted. They are not locked. They are not corrupt (they open normally). When I try to delete them I get this message:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “A.jpg” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)
Any ideas?

Have you unmounted then mounted the ext HD to see if this has any effect?
