Default Mail

Wondering if there is an update for me to use. Currently using Version 12.4 (3445.104.11) on Mohave 10.14.5. New emails only load if the app is closed and then reopened. Can easily use a web based email, but I like the Mac native email on the desktop.

in 'Mail' > 'Preferences' > 'General' is "Check for new messages" set to Automatic or some time interval?
