Converting voice mail music to aac in an email

I wonder if the excellent freeware program HandBrake will convert a "music" (ie, audio) file. I suspect it can. Handbrake is available from here:

I have used it to successfully convert video files in various formats to other video formats.

When you import them to iTunes, what music "format" are they in?
