Thanks for getting back to me Cory. I am looking at a SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD (on Amazon). up to 1050MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2 - External Solid State Drive - SDSSDE61-1T00-G25 Hope this helps, I had difficulty getting a link.
It may be compatible from what I can see, but not sure it is backward compatible with USB 3.1 that your iMac has. Also, it may be a bit overkill for use as a Time Machine drive.
As I mentioned, that SSD may/may not be backwards compatible with USB 3.1, but it does have a USB-C to USB adapter included, so that may allow ot to work.
I have a similar question. I had a conversation with Apple support regarding updating to Big Sur and the tech mentioned that the hybrid HD in my 2015 mac is failure prone and on borrowed time. He also said Apple will not replace the internal HD.
So…. Can I just transfer everything to an external SSD, boot from that and just ignore the internal drive?
