Another "duh!" question

I want to upload pics from my phone to my MacBook. I connect the USB cable and then ... ??? I can see how to get to the hard drive and inserting a CD takes care of itself but how do I find this particular USB connection and use it? Nothing appears on the desktop to help me out. I've already called Sprint and was told I should be able to upload with the USB cable.
Told ya ... duh!
