airport extreme problem

I bought a new macbook pro with 10.6.3 with airport extreme built in. It hooks up to my 2wire modem through ethernet but doesn't recognize wireless. I even called at&t and he couldn't help. He told me to call apple that it might be a software problem. Any ideas?
