Admin password

My Mac Mini is trying to download the newest software but when it asks for my “ admin password” I cannot provide it. It’s been a long time since I last needed it and my memory isn’t good enough any more. Is there a workaround that will let me update my mini?
It seems that my devices no longer auto save new PW’s. Is there a place where I can check why this feature seems to be missing? Occasionally it will flash a “ save new password “ but by the time I see it, it disappears.
Any help would be appreciated.
