This will depend on what you do, and which machine you prefer to work on for individual tasks.

One thing that I would recommend though is to upgrade the RAM in the MacBook Air to 32GB.

I’m a freelance professional music arranger/composer. I’ve have 3 external SSDs -SanDisk SSD 1 x 1TB & 1 x 2TB & 1 Samsung SSD x 4TB. I’ve various flavours of sample libraries from Spitfire, East West, Native Instruments, Kontakt etc. stored on the SSDs, there's another 2 other storage devices I utilise for additional backups plus 2 monitors, all this is connected/plumbed into my iMac. Because I have 2 monitors I’m pretty sure that I’d like to keep the iMac for the one I’d rather work on.
Thanks for the heads up on the 32RAM, point taken - My techie mentor always told me that I should really get as much RAM is I could afford!
