Hi there,
This question has to do with the downgrading of a 2010 27" iMac to get to install the original MacOS Snow Leopard 10.6.4 which had originally been installed.
Just a bit of background so to better understand what I'm trying to achieve.
- FIRST - not my computer. My mother was using this originally this for family business originally to use MYOB and other software, mostly which came off a G3 17" iMac with 10.2.8 to 10.4.x... so the applications were 68K/PPC but were able to be run under 10.6.x due to Rosetta compatibility. Our original setup was a 7200/90 running 7.5.2 -> 9.2.1, so as can be seen, we have had a large history of data, and accompanying applications which were transposed to this 2010 iMac.
- The OS had been updated to High Sierra, but the ability to run the original 68k/PPC apps no longer function, and the machine was set aside.
- Due to the recent requirements, the system was needed but for some reason the power unit failed, so (I thought of doing and did the following):
- Bought another Power Supply -> working
- Upgrade the original i3 and currently have installed (XEON X3480) with i7-880 as backup, but may be thinking of getting i7-875k due to being able to overclock
- Upgrade the original ATI Radeon HD 5670 and currently have installed (nVidia K5100M) with nVidia GTX880M - both of which had been flashed to work on Macs
- Upgraded the original 2 pipe graphics card head sink to the 3 pipe version to accommodate the nVidia K5100M/nVidia GTX880M cards
- Upgrade the original 4GB DDR3 and currently have installed (OWC 4 x 8GB DDR3) sticks from macsales.com
- Wifi/Blue tooth/Superdrive - remain unchanged, though the wifi/Bluetooth can be upgraded later on.
- After installing all parts mentioned above, with the i7-880 and GTX880M set aside for backup purposes, the machine was working well, HOWEVER, I need to downgrade the system to Snow Leopard and this is where I'm having a bad day, so to speak.
- Going through what's needed to be able to downgrade, I have done the following:

- Formatted the internal 1TB Sata drive to have HFS+ as Snow Leopard doesn't understand the new HD format which I think 10.7 or later had put into place. - Not sure why but setting 1 Partition doesn't work... (Issue 1)

- Start the system by forcing DVD Restore disk to load first by pressing 'C' at startup... (These are the original disks 10.6.4), I even went so far to purchase 10.6.3 from eBay as I thought that the DVD's are scratched, they weren't and both the 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 cause kernal panic and locks up. (Issue 2)
- Tried to start the system using DVD 2 which has Apple Hardware Test, by pressing 'D' at boot -> It then tries to connect to the internet for system recovery... something I think got put in place after 10.6.x as I don't recall this type of functionality originally. -> I get an error - 5048 (Issue 3)
- Tried to get 10.8.5 image and boot off USB
- Start the system with 'option' key press at boot and have three choices 'Recovery', Default, System Install (MacOS 10.8.5 image). Note: I had tried to install FreeBSD 15 at one point as I was getting frustrated with multiple attempts to get 10.6.4 installed and not being successful -> That is the default option, but after installing the OS, now I'm getting ata0 errors, so, it could be a disk0 or startup HD issue, maybe a hard-drive pre-failure problem
- Off the USB 10.8.5 image, I try the Hard Drive setup so to see the what the Hard drive partitions look like... Currently I have a few due to maybe the FreeBSD partition mapping, but it seems that even when I originally tried to formatted the drive to 1 partition and 1 partition only in HFS+, it didn't happen and that is why I'm getting the 10.8.5 options at startup, not what's off the 10.6.4 DVD. REALLY ANNOYING!
ALL in all, All I want to achieve is have the hardware above installed with 10.6.4 -> 10.6.8 working in order to use original 68k/PPC apps. PERIOD.
If anyone has tried or knows a work around, I'd be over the moon. Even if it's simple as getting a new HD to not have the drivers do stupid things... I'm willing and able even with the current BS costing of hard-drives.
Thanks, and have a great day.
