Where do zip files go after unarchiving?

Hi folks, new here and new to macs in general.
I have a tonne of questions but will start with this hopefully easy one...

When I double click a .zip folder a progress bar appears and the text reads "unarchiving folder" or something like that. Then when it finally finishes the progress bar closes and nothing else opens or appears or anything. How can I specify where the unzipped files should land - and in fact, where will they have gone?

Normally they are in the same folder as the zip file. In Lion there are overlapping the zip file.

If the creator of the zip has made it so it creates folders that match the original then all bets are off, could be anywhere, but that's the same no matter what the OS.
