Trash not opening

Machine is a Late 2012 iMac running High Sierra. Problem is that I'm unable to open the trash and there are files in it that I would like to recover. Any thoughts on the subject will be appreciated. Thx for looking.

Hello,

First thing to do would be to restart the Mac, as that has been known to fix that issue.

Let us know if you have already done that, and we'll see if we can provide additional troubleshooting steps.

I've tried re-booting and that didn't resolved the issue. Just a moment ago I double clicked on the trash icon and it appeared to start to open. There was rapid information coming from the trash but it immediately scrolled off the lower right side of my screen. Definitely a first for me, I never saw this activity before.
