Can't empty trash can

I keep having problems when I try to empty my trash can. It always stopps and tell me that it can not be don because "Preferences" are in use or library or something else.
What can I do?

Hello,

-What version of OS X?
-Have you tried restarting the Mac, then attempting to empty the Trash?
-What are the files that are "stuck" in the Trash?

Hello,

Also really need to know the exact message and as Cory said which files are stuck, and are you happy using terminal?
