Sound input/output

Hi

I have a Mac book pro retina 13" mid 14 model which only has a headphone output socket unlike my old machine which has both input and output

I ideally need to use an external high quality mic to record voice samples on to a spectrogram programme
Is it possible to do this ?
I have looked in the sounds section of Sytem pref's and cannot find an option there to switch the 1/4 jack from output to input as someone told me i could.
Can anyone advise me please ?
