Software keeps disappearing off desktop

So I'm running Os x Lion, I have downloaded Skype on my computer I put save to Desktop when it gets done I use it then close the app then it disappears, my video converter software does the same thing maybe it's something simple just getting started in Mac Software so does anyone have any suggestions on why it keeps disappearing???

You need to drag them into the Applications Folder, not run them from the Disk Image on the Desktop...

Did you drag Skype.app from the downloaded installer dmg. file on your Desktop, to your Applications folder and launch Skype then or are you running Skype from the installer .dmg?
